Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the heartbreaking, unexpected passing of Richard Anthony Czata, who passed away before his time on March 18th, at only 73 years young. He was the beloved husband of Patricia, his wife of 51 years, and the most amazing loving father, who will be sadly missed by his children, Steve (Christine), Teresa and Michael (Jennie) and his grandchildren Evan, Lauren, Michaela, Cadence, Ethan and Addison. "He was a true charm of a man, in all of his roles in his life". He befriended and touched the lives of many, served his community as a respected police officer for 29 years and will be loved and missed forever.

So sorry to hear of Rick's sudden passing. We both worked 14 Detective office, as Detective Constables on the same shift. This is what I posted on Facebook upon hearing of his passing. "A Detective Constable is assigned to a Detective as a trainee. It is a promotion from a uniform position because they consider you have proven yourself smart enough to potentially be the next crop of Detectives (D's). Us? It meant the world to us! We had made it! a 3 year position usually, one that opened the door to all the other positions in the service, including promotion in rank. Rick and I were two DC's working an entire week of night shift in 14 Division, downtown Toronto, the area the tour buses don't go, in the summer of 1987, if memory serves me, sans D's as all the D's had the week off on leave! All. Of. Them! Rick and I weren't worried, we'd been trained by the best! He and I solved everything that happened, covering over for all of One District, and I mean everything. It was a dream week. These were cases so bad the Duty Inspector, the ranking officer in Toronto during the night shift, attended almost all of them. He saw Rick and I at every call handling things like a D would have. But we were quickly discovered to be just DC's by the Duty Inspector, yet he was impressed to the point that we were documented for doing a great job making the Dep't look good! And there was some hairy stuff! Headline stuff! But the bi-product of that good documentation was that it became known there were no D's working! The Det. Sergeant, the guy in charge of the D office, got documented for allowing all the D's to have that same week in the summer off! We were not popular because we were blamed for bringing the heat down on everyone! A new rule came into effect that the entire shift of D's could no longer have the same holiday week at the same time! But that one week was one of my proudest moments, working as a team with Rickie! We were Kings! RIP Brother. Sail on." My deepest condolences for your loss.

I worked with Rick in 14 Division and he was a great copper that made time for the younger officers in the station. His smile was infectious and lit up the room. He was the salt of the earth type of guy that had all the time in the world for anyone. My condolences to his family and may he rest in eternal peace.
